Reconnecting with Nature Through Forest Therapy

Mar 31, 2025 12:00AM ● By Natural Awakenings Milwaukee
In a world that moves fast, Gwen Ripp, founder of Intentionally Outdoors, invites people to slow down, reconnect and find healing in nature. As a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, Gwen has cultivated a space where individuals can experience the restorative power of the outdoors through Guided Forest Therapy Walks—a practice inspired by the Japanese tradition of Shinrin-Yoku, or forest bathing.

Gwen’s journey into this work is deeply personal. “My journey with nature started as a child, running barefoot on the grass and tending to our family’s farm in central Wisconsin,” she shares. “As life took me to the city, I lost touch with that deep connection. Despite a busy and productive life, I struggled with depression, anxiety and various health issues. Forest Therapy was transformative for me and rekindled the relationship I once knew.”

Now, Gwen’s mission is to guide others in nurturing a richer connection with the natural world, encouraging mindfulness, relaxation and a deeper appreciation for the environment. She is hosting several upcoming events.

Spring Awakening Day Retreat: April 19

This immersive, day-long retreat is designed to help participants transition from the stillness of winter into the vibrancy of spring. Taking place at the Shalom House, in West Bend, it begins with a two-hour Guided Forest Therapy Walk, offering a mindful and sensory-based connection with the land. A 60-minute Vinyasa yoga session will follow, as well as a thoughtfully crafted, three-course vegan lunch with wholesome, seasonal ingredients. The afternoon allows time for reflection and self-care—whether through journaling, hiking, resting or planting calendula seeds as a symbol of new growth. Open to adults 18 and older, this retreat offers a space for restoration and connection to self and nature.

Earth Day Public Guided Forest Therapy Walk: April 22

Celebrate Earth Day with a Guided Forest Therapy Walk. This two-hour experience, designed for adults 18 and older, provides an opportunity to slow down, tune into the natural world and cultivate a deeper relationship with the land. The walk is not about exercise or hiking but rather about engaging the senses, fostering mindfulness and experiencing the therapeutic benefits of nature. Gwen will lead participants through a series of sensory-based invitations that encourage relaxation and introspection. This gentle walk, covering less than a mile, welcomes individuals of all activity levels and takes place rain or shine. Spaces are limited, and advance registration is required to ensure an intimate and meaningful experience in honor of Mother Earth.

Human Nature: Guided Forest Therapy + Nature Connection Retreat: August 28

The Human Nature Retreat in Soldiers Grove will take place from August 28 to 31. This three-night, four-day retreat is designed to foster deep connection, somatic movement and nourishment for the mind, body and spirit. Set amidst the rolling landscapes of Red Clover Ranch, participants will have the freedom to slow down, reconnect with the land and rediscover their own human nature. Whether you are new to Forest Therapy or a seasoned participant, this retreat welcomes all with open arms. Thoughtfully prepared meals with dietary accommodations will be provided, and guests can choose between private or shared room options. Registration opens on April 11; register before April 30 for early bird pricing.
