When we see litter in our waterways or pollutants clouding our skies, we witness more than environmental damage—we see the direct impact on our own health. Earth Day is a call to action, reminding us that going green is about honoring the Earth AND about protecting our mental, physical and spiritual well-being.
I am reminded of a quote from Brave New Medicine by Cynthia Li, M.D., who underwent a profound journey of self-discovery, blending Western medicine with integrative, functional and natural health practices.
“Really anything we put into the air, water, and earth ended up in us, and vice versa.
It was also clear that, while cleaning house might reduce the amount of toxins
my family was exposed to, it was only a stopgap solution. The items I threw out
would end up somewhere else, and in someone else.
As it was with health and illness, there was no here/there line between humans
and the environment.
Healthy planet, healthy people.
Sick planet, sick people.
The information on harmful chemicals was new to me, but it wasn’t new.”
For 31 years, Natural Awakenings has been dedicated to educating, empowering and connecting communities around holistic health and environmental wellness. Long before sustainability became a mainstream concern, researchers, public health experts and environmental organizations were working to raise awareness and inspire change.
This month, we invite you to take action—for yourself and for the world around you. Take your time to engage with the inspiring content in this issue and discover what resonates with you.
Attend an Earth Day event, visit a holistic health fair, make strides to detoxify your home or simply spend time in nature.
Here’s to a cleaner, healthier world—starting with each of us.
