Natural Awakenings Milwaukee Magazine

Letter from Publisher

I hope you are enjoying these last months of summer at festivals and community events in fine green spaces throughout Milwaukee. Our August issue is packed with valuable information for all aspects of healthful, sustainable living.

A favorite song often transports us to happy memories—a moment of carefree youth, our first love, a road trip to a special destination—bringing personal evidence to the words of the late Dick Clark, who said, “Music is the soundtrack of our lives.” Intuitively, it seems logical that listening to music, singing and playing instruments may help us maintain and improve our physical, psychological and social well-being as we age. Marlaina Donato’s article “Healing Harmonies” examines precisely how music can ease pain and depression and aid brain development. Locally, the healing power of music and sound is uniquely incorporated into yoga by Rosie Rain, the topic of this month’s Community Spotlight.

August is an ideal time for parents to hit the reset button, taking stock of myriad challenges today’s children face, especially as they head back to school. In the article “21st Century Parenting: Preparing Kids for the Future,” Meredith Montgomery offers insights for raising kind, resilient and resourceful kids in a world vastly different from the one we grew up in.

Our August spotlight shines on animals, too. Writer Julie Peterson interviews neurologist Aysha Akhtar, who has written about the neurobiology of the bond between humans and animals in her book Our Symphony with Animals: On Health, Empathy, and Our Shared Destinies. Peterson also presents a helpful overview of the natural approaches used by holistic veterinarians.

As we shift toward holistic, natural and drug-free solutions for ourselves, we want the same for our fur babies. Pet parents will also enjoy this month’s Natural Pet spotlight, “Vet Check,” which helps readers resolve the root causes of ailments such as fleas and tick infestations, skin issues, joint stiffness and behavioral problems. Along with exercise, fresh air and water, healthy food and plenty of affection, there are many solutions that are sure to help our furry friends enjoy long, happy, healthy lives.

While technology continues to benefit our lives in many ways, it’s important to be aware of the risks it may pose to our health. Despite concerns by scientists, medical experts and many Wisconsinites, Governor Evers recently signed a bill allowing 5G-enabled cellular antennas to be deployed throughout residential areas across Wisconsin. Our Action Alert on page 12 provides more information about the potential dangers of 5G and ways to take action against the governor’s bill. You are also invited to attend a free online summit about 5G wireless technology at The5GSummit.com.

Here’s to complete wellness for our entire families,
