The third annual Milwaukee Fringe Festival will be held Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26 at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. This festival highlights artists and creatives of all disciplines, and is intended to bring awareness and enjoyment of local and regional art and art-makers. The festival takes place in venues within and surrounding the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, including their outdoor space alongside the Milwaukee River. The event includes theatrical actors, painters, musicians, dancers, performance artists and playwrights, all participating in this joyous celebration of Milwaukee’s vibrant arts culture.

Fringe festivals began in 1947 when eight theater companies arrived at the Edinburgh International Festival hoping to put on their shows. When the larger festival turned them down, they decided to put on their own. These smaller groups literally performed on the fringe of the larger festival, forming the genesis of the fringe festival. Fringe festivals have since formed in arts-minded cities such as New York, London, Sydney and Minneapolis.
