Letter from Publisher
Recently, I was honored to be interviewed, along with 23 other wellness entrepreneurs, for the Wellness Business Success Secrets online summit. We were asked to share how our clarity of purpose and commitment to our personal passion has allowed us to do work that we love. Through July 9, anyone can watch the summit for free by registering at tinyurl.com/success616.
In my interview, I was asked, “What is your secret to being a successful businesswoman and publisher?” Although it may be unorthodox, the truth is that I don’t use spreadsheets or set traditional goals for my business. Rather, I set intentions; I focus on the reasons I choose to publish Natural Awakenings and the value the magazine provides our readers, advertisers and community. My approach is heart centered, aiming to create a positive experience for all.
The interview question was interesting to explore because success means different things to different people. Think about it: how much money do you truly need to be happy, live comfortably and well, and have all the things that you need? We all want more money, but how much do we actually need? Obviously, success is not just about money. If your business is successful and you are earning a lot of money, but your health or relationships are suffering as a result, is that success?
April Thompson explores the idea of true prosperity in her article, “Enlightening Ideas about Money: Think Independence, Intimacy, Integrity.” Most people have conflicting emotions about money, and many of us received no education about it, either at home or school. After we graduate, we spend the rest of our lives trying to earn this thing we know little about while continuing to have confused thoughts and feelings about it.
I ended my interview with this final thought: “Rather than focusing on earning money, the most important thing we can do to be successful is to focus on doing work that truly inspires us and is meaningful to us. Engaging in cooperation and collaboration helps us avoid the destructive energy of competition. Every day, we should ask ourselves the question: ‘What can I do to contribute to the world to make it a better place?’ Then, listen to and follow the wise guidance of our hearts.” I believe this will lead to success and true prosperity in all aspects of life.
May you follow your heart into abundance,
