J.W. Winco, Inc., a leading supplier of standard industrial machine components, has installed a green roof system on its facility, located at 2815 South Calhoun Road, in New Berlin. The remodeling project received approval for incentive funding from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District Regional Green Roof Initiative. Designed by the Milwaukee-based company Hanging Gardens, the roof both slows down stormwater during heavy rainfall and stores significant amounts for reuse, thereby diminishing the risk of sewer overflows and improving the overall water quality in the region. The vegetation on green roofs lowers energy usage by reducing heat retention. Additional benefits include improving air quality, increasing urban green space and wildlife habitat, extending roof life by protecting it from harmful ultraviolet rays and temperature extremes, and providing educational opportunities.
