Learn to Eat Local in Milwaukee
The Eat Local Resource Fair, held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., August 17, at the Urban Ecology Center, in Riverside Park, is an annual opportunity to celebrate local food. The event offers tools, tips and ideas for eating locally all year and prepares residents for the Milwaukee Eat Local Challenge from September 1 to 15, when they are encouraged to eat locally as often as possible to gain a better appreciation of their relationship to food, from farm to fork.
The schedule of workshops and demonstrations includes the talk, Food Advocacy and Policy 101, with Mary Ryan, at 11:30 a.m., followed by Eating Locally with Little Kids, a cooking demonstration led by Chef Annie Wegner LeFort, at 12:15 p.m. Saving local heritage foods is the topic of The Ark of Taste, presented by Jennifer Casey of Slow Food WISE, at 1 p.m. Judith Mayer, of Outpost Natural Foods, leads the cooking demonstration, Eating Locally on a Budget, at 1:45 p.m.
Local foods and lunch will be available for purchase directly from the growers and artisans that produce them. The DIY Corner will offer information about food preservation, gardening and beekeeping.
