Take a DTour for Art at the Reedsburg Fermentation Fest
Weaving through the Driftless Area around Reedsburg, Wisconsin, the 50-mile-long Farm/Art DTour will combine art, live performances, educational exhibits and breathtaking scenery—whether traveled by automobile or bicycle—to complement the cooking demos, food samples and culinary seminars that comprise the 10-day Reedsburg Fermentation Fest, running October 12 through 21.
The Farm/Art DTour, detailed on a downloadable map, consists of captivating ephemeral art installations by leading national artists, as well as six artist-made Roadside Culture Stands, plus Field Notes—educational interpretations of country, farm and field—and musical Pasture Performances by groups such as Graminy.
With numerous classes about all things fermented—including chocolate, sourdough bread, kombucha, kefir, beer, wine, hard cider, sausage and corned beef—Fermentation Fest offers plenty to taste. Participants can learn to keep bees, raise chickens and make compost, as well as make breads, cheeses, sauerkraut and dill pickles in workshops led by experts such as Sandor Katz, author of Wild Fermentation.
“Fermentation is transformation: from grain to beer, milk to yogurt, cabbage to kimchee, hayfield to stage and from one kind of community to another. During the transformational process, nutrients and flavor develop and energy is released—perfect ingredients for an annual festival,” explains event organizer Donna Neuwirth, executive director of Wormfarm Institute, an award-winning nonprofit working to build a sustainable future for agriculture and the arts by fostering vital links between them.
