Urban Ecology Center Hosts Open House for CSA Farms

Community supported agriculture (CSA) refers to a partnership between a farmer and a community of supporters that purchase shares of the farm’s production and in return, receive weekly bundles of fresh produce throughout the growing season; typically from late May through November. The annual open house at the Urban Ecology Center, in Riverside Park, held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 9, is a great opportunity to talk with local farmers and learn about their growing practices and programs. CSA shares may differ in size, length of season, variety of fruits and vegetables offered and pickup and payment options.

Workshops include Intro to CSAs, at 1 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. with UEC’s Jamie Ferschinger; Cooking from your CSA box, at 12:15 p.m. and 2 p.m., with Chef Annie Wegner LeFort; and Multiple Biological Effects from Low-Level Pesticides in Foods, at 11:30 a.m., with Warren Porter, of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Lunch will be available for purchase.
