Yoga Society Relocates, Changes Name to Himalayan Yoga and Meditation
One of Milwaukee’s original yoga centers, the Yoga Society, has changed its name and moved to a new location. Now called Himalayan Yoga and Meditation (HYM), to reflect its origin and style of practice, the new center is located at 5000 West Vliet St, in Milwaukee.
Himalayan Yoga and Meditation will offer hatha yoga, meditation and Ayurveda classes, a yoga psychology bookstore, yoga teacher training and continuing education and the opportunity to connect with expert yoga practitioners from around the world through guest lectures and travel abroad. HYM has a number of events scheduled for spring, including a fundraiser for a school servicing the underprivileged of rural India, kirtan, Ayurveda and yoga psychology workshops with special guests from Chicago, India and Chile.
The Yoga Society was founded in 1971 by Nina Johnson under the direction of Swami Rama of the Himalayas, former sankaracharya (high spiritual post) of India. This nonprofit center is part of the 1,000-year-old Himalayan Yoga tradition that fosters self-awareness through the practice of yoga, meditation and contemplation. As part of the international Himalayan Yoga community, the center hosts visiting yogis and scholars from across the globe for lectures on yoga psychology, holistic health and stress reduction and offers advanced training through affiliated ashrams in India.
