Riverwest Yogashala, Milwaukee’s beloved nonprofit Iyengar Yoga school, celebrated its 20th anniversary this past fall. Over two decades, the studio has become a cornerstone in the community, offering a safe and welcoming space for people of all ages, genders and abilities to explore yoga and wellness practices.
Riverwest Yogashala invites both seasoned practitioners and newcomers to explore their bright blue door at Locust and Fratney in the heart of the Riverwest neighborhood. Inside, they will find a sunny, cozy space with solid wood floors and ample support for various bodies and abilities. The studio is filled with love and a sense of community.
For those unsure where to start, Riverwest Yogashala offers a variety of classes to suit different needs and levels of experience:
Yoga Basics with Hart (Community Gift Class): A gentle, supported introduction to yoga movements that focuses on foundational practices to create space and build strength. Perfect for beginners or those wanting to revisit the basics.
Beginners Yoga Course with Sara: Designed for those new to Iyengar yoga, this course builds strength, stamina, and confidence through standing poses, forward and back extensions, restorative postures, and introductory inversions.
Intermediate Yoga with Sara: For students with over a year of Iyengar yoga experience, this class dives deeper into poses, variations and subtle aspects of asana including twists, back extensions, inversions and pranayama (breathwork).
Therapeutic Yoga with Tracey (in-person & online): Focuses on relieving tension and common ailments through personalized instruction, basic anatomy, alignment cues and yogic philosophies for a healthy life. Suitable for all levels.
Gentle Therapeutic Yoga with Tracey: Similar to Therapeutic Yoga, this class emphasizes gentle and healing practices for overall well-being, calming the nervous system and releasing tension and trauma.
Yoga at Home with Sara (online): Ideal for those needing a slower, gentler pace due to ailments or age. No yoga experience is necessary.
Yoga for Elders and Elders-to-be with Sara: A slower-paced class focusing on stability, movement and restorative poses.
Community Art Night with Kami and Phoebe: An inclusive event encouraging artistic expression in a supportive community, with various mediums and snacks provided.
Mat Pilates with Christine: Classical Pilates mat exercises focused on core strength and overall balance. No experience required; drop-ins welcome.
SOMA Breath Workshops with Sarah: A transformative practice combining breathwork, healing music and visualization meditation for physical and mental health benefits.
Restorative Meditation with Shami: A reiki-infused meditation class aimed at finding peace, joy and rest. No experience required; drop-ins welcome.
